Escalandrum – Piazzolla Plays Piazzolla
Although he left us 20 years ago, Argentinean tango master Astor Piazzolla remains very much alive. The proof: this vibrant tribute offered by redoubtable drummer and grandson Daniel “Pipi” Piazzolla, with his excellent porteño jazz sextet Escalandrum-Mariano Sívori (double bass), Martín Pantyrer (clarinet and saxophone), Nicolás Guerschberg (piano), Damián Fogiel (saxophone) and Gustavo Musso (saxophone). Taking up such Piazzolla classics as Libertango, Tanguedia and Adios Nonino, Pipi and his band deliver a concert fusing tango and jazz with a perfectly natural fluency and grace. After performances all over the globe -notably at the famed Gran Rex in Buenos Aires for an audience of 3000, they bring the magic to us in the warmth and intimacy of L’Astral. A genuine privilege.
